Got Questions?

We've Got Answers.

Whether you're a parent, participant, or just curious—this is the place to learn what Kō Mana is really about. From safety and structure to who we serve and how we grow, we’ve laid it all out so you can feel confident every step of the way.

Safety and Support

  • Yes—safety is our top priority. Our programs are staffed by highly trained mentors, including veterans, first responders, and certified instructors with real-world experience in risk management, emergency response, and youth leadership.

We maintain a high adult-to-youth ratio, enforce strict safety protocols, and provide clear structure throughout each day. All activities are supervised, and our team is trained in first aid, CPR, and emergency procedures.

We believe that growth happens in challenge—but never at the cost of safety, trust, or well-being.

  • Our staff is trained in first aid, CPR, and emergency response protocols. Many of our instructors have deep experience in real-world emergencies. We have medical kits on-site and emergency transportation plans in place.

Parents will be notified immediately if anything occurs beyond minor scrapes or strains.

  • Yes—our team is made up of veterans, first responders, ranchers, tradesmen, athletes, and respected local leaders, all with real-world experience in high-performing teams and youth mentorship.

This isn’t your typical youth program run by one adult and a few former participants. Our instructors are highly trained, deeply experienced, and purpose-driven—bringing a wealth of practical knowledge, leadership, and integrity to every session.

  • We understand that some young men may come in with a history of substance use. While Kō Mana maintains a zero-use policy during group programs, we also recognize that every situation is different.

If this applies to your son, we’ll work with your family ahead of time to create a realistic and supportive plan—based on the substance involved and the level of dependency. In some cases, participants may be offered an adapted experience, including separation from the main group, additional mentorship, and a personalized accountability plan.
Our goal is to meet young men where they are—without enabling, without judgment, and with a path forward rooted in integrity and personal ownership. If this may apply to your son, please let us know during the application process so we can evaluate it together.

  • We believe in challenge by choice—not force. If a participant is uncomfortable or hesitant, our staff will meet them where they’re at, talk it through, and help them build confidence step by step.

That said, we also hold a standard: part of the growth process is learning to lean into discomfort, not avoid it. While no one is forced into unsafe or extreme situations, we do encourage each young man to engage fully, take ownership of their effort, and be part of the team.

Our mentors are trained to support boys through resistance with patience, clarity, and grounded leadership.

  • We do our best to accommodate all dietary needs and health concerns. Please share all relevant info during the application process so we can make appropriate arrangements and keep your son safe, supported, and well-fed.

Program Details & Structure

  • We intentionally keep group sizes small—typically between 8 to 16 participants for the overnight programs. This ensures quality mentorship, strong peer connection, and personalized guidance.

  • Each day blends physical work, mental focus, skill-building, nature, animals, reflective time, and more.

The mornings often start with movement, ranch work, or challenges. Afternoons are filled with skill-building, cultural learning, or nature excursions. Evenings end around the fire with journaling and group dialogue.

  • We provide a detailed packing list after enrollment, but essentials include: rugged clothing, closed-toe shoes, water gear, journal, and personal hygiene items. All tools and equipment for the program are provided. We keep it simple—this isn’t a fashion show, it’s a growth experience.

  • Kō Mana is based on a working ranch on Hawai‘i Island, between Waimea and Honoka‘a—a culturally rich and naturally stunning part of the islands. With access to forest, pasture, and coastline, the location is ideal for outdoor learning, growth, and grounded living.

  • We offer:

    • Multi-day retreats (7, 14, and 30 days)

    • Weekend Warrior sessions (half-day, 1-day, 2-day)

    • The Firekeeper track (yearlong coaching + 30-day immersion)

All programs blend hands-on learning, ranch work, cultural practices, and personal development.

Purpose & Philosophy

  • No, Kō Mana is not therapy; but we offer a lot of therapeutic activities. We are a personal development and mentorship program designed to help young men grow through challenge, connection, and real-world experience.

While participants often experience emotional breakthroughs, increased confidence, and a stronger sense of purpose, we do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.
We focus on skill-building, mindset, accountability, and self-leadership—guided by mentors with real-life experience, not clinicians. For those needing clinical support, we’re happy to collaborate with licensed professionals when appropriate.

    Do you offer scholarships?
We’re currently in the process of launching the Kō Mana Youth Foundation, which will provide scholarships for:

    • Youth from Hawai‘i County and across the islands

    • Children of fallen first responders and military service members
For families outside of these groups, we’re happy to connect you with resources and organizations that may help fund your child’s participation. Don’t hesitate to reach out—we’ll do our best to support your journey.

Is there follow-up after the program ends?
Yes. All participants become part of The Good Dude Brotherhood, an ongoing network where they can stay connected, access resources, and continue growing.

  • Expect your son to return with more confidence, stronger self-awareness, better communication, and a deeper sense of responsibility. Most parents report noticeable shifts in motivation, maturity, and mindset—even after just 7 days.

  • Skills range from practical to personal, including:

    • Farming, animal care, and horsemanship

    • Tool and trade basics

    • First aid and wilderness survival

    • Leadership, communication, and mental fitness

    • Cultural practices, mindfulness, and emotional regulation

  • We strongly encourage a digital detox during the program. Phones are collected at the start and returned periodically for family check-ins. This allows participants to fully engage—building presence, connection, and awareness without constant distraction.
We recommend not discussing this in detail beforehand. We introduce it as a group and approach it with purpose, not punishment. Within a day or two, most participants are so immersed in the experience that they don’t miss their devices.

One of our core goals is to help young men reset their relationship with technology and screen time—something we take seriously and handle with intention.

  • That’s completely normal—and honestly, pretty common. Many participants arrive feeling unsure or anxious, especially if it’s their first time in this kind of environment.
To help ease that transition, we provide:

    • Two group calls before the program starts to meet the team and fellow participants

    • Introductory videos to give a feel for the experience

    • Optional 1-on-1 calls with our staff if your son needs extra support or reassurance
No outdoor or ranch experience is required—just a willingness to show up. Most young men leave feeling proud of what they’ve accomplished and surprised by how much they enjoyed it.

Lodging | Access | Scholarships

  • Yes—on-site lodging is complimentary as part of the overnight programs.

Participants may also choose to stay off-site (with family or guardians) and use our daily shuttle service to and from Waimea. If your youth plans to stay off-site, please let us know in advance so we can coordinate accordingly.

Please be aware, there is price reduction for those staying off-property.

Enrollment & Eligibility

  • We review each application carefully to ensure the program is the right fit. After you apply, we’ll follow up with an intake call and next steps. Some programs fill quickly, so we recommend applying early.

  • Most Kō Mana programs are designed for young men ages 15–23.
Our overnight programs are typically grouped from 18–23 year olds and 15–17 year olds. Our Day Camps are less stringent on age grouping. For local groups, we offer younger offerings in partnership with parents and youth organizations.

  • Not at this time—but possibly in the future. Kō Mana is currently focused on youth and young adult development, but we plan to offer parent/child programs soon.
If you’re part of a group of adults interested in a private experience, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us to explore custom opportunities.

  • Not at this time for overnight programs. Kō Mana currently focuses on male youth development, but we plan to offer co-ed and girls’ programs in the future—once staffing, facilities, and support systems are fully in place to ensure a safe and high-quality experience for all participants.

Stay connected with us for updates as we grow.
